Free UPS Lost Package Guide
Got a lost or missing package from UPS? Here’s your step by step guide for navigating their system.
Before starting a claim, make sure you have looked around for the package. Drivers try to leave your package hidden for safety reasons, so your package could be hiding somewhere just out of plain sight. Drivers have been known to leave packages behind walls or frames, or even in your bushes. If after looking you still can’t find your package, UPS recommends contacting the sender. UPS says this because “you may not have all the shipment information needed for a thorough investigation and, if the package cannot be located, we will settle the claim with the sender.” This could save you work by not having to file the claim yourself, so contact the sender of the lost or stolen item directly and have them deal with UPS. If you are the sender or your sender will not work with your or UPS directly, follow the instructions below:
Before going any further: UPS requires you to wait 24 hours from the original delivery date before filing a claim. So you don’t hit a dead end early on, make sure it has been 24 hours past the original delivery date before continuing our free UPS lost package guide. Gather all records of purchase including;
Receipts, Tracking numbers, Shipping Details, Description of envelop or box and Contact the seller/ sender to review their resend and refund policy.
If your UPS package was sent by Amazon, Ebay, or others contact them first. They “may” replace it.

After 24 hours have passed, you can now file a claim and we will walk you through this process. First, click on this link to open the claims page in a new tab, and then return to the guide.
It should open you to this screen (minus the boxes of our commentary):
Enter your package’s tracking number, indicate whether you are the shipper or not and list the type of issue you are contacting them about. If you found this page, you are likely going to select “The package is lost”. Click continue on the bottom left to move to the next step.
Once on the next page, attach any supporting documentation for your claim (tracking numbers, receipts, shipping details and a description of the box). Then submit your claim. Once the claim has been submitted, 1 of 2 things will happen:
- If UPS is unable to locate the missing package, a Damage/Loss Notification claim letter will be emailed, faxed or mailed to the shipper; UPS will not send claim letters to a receiver
- If UPS locates the package, the claim will not be approved, delivery information will be sent to the shipper of record, and the reporting process will end
UPS will then communicate with the shipper/seller of the package to determine the value of the contents in the lost package. If a claim has been approved, the payment will be processed. UPS will pay the lesser of purchase or replacement costs, up to the declared value. Typically, claim checks are mailed to the shipper’s billing address on file three to five business days after UPS receives the required documentation.
What if their records say your package was delivered?
If the UPS has checked their facilities, vehicles and have a record that your package was delivered, they may not be liable for your refund. At this point, you are a victim of mail or package theft, which is one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S. You are not alone according to a report by Parks Associates 11 million Americans have had a package stolen and more than 33% of Americans are concerned about their packages being stolen.
NOTE: While neither of these options will help you get your package back; they can help law enforcement better understand and map crime rates in your area. If you paid for third party package insurance, or your homeowner’s insurance covers it, they will require one of the previous reports you already completed and a police report to file a claim.
